2027 Calf Plan

A look at what we're expecting from our herd next year

Planning Ahead for Quality Calves

At Mossy Valley Farm, we plan our breedings carefully to produce calves that reflect the best traits of the Dexter breed — correct build, gentle temperament, and excellent foraging ability.

Below are our anticipated 2027 pairings. Expected colors and traits are based on the genetics of each dam and sire.  As the calves arrive, we will add their pictures to the slideshows below.

Dam: SMF Hazel
Sire: K&B Valley's Logan
Expected: Spring 2027
Traits: Calf will be dun and carry A2/A2 milk.  She had a very nice dun bull calf in 2026 with Neo.  We liked the cross so much that we decided to replicate it.  Chondro and PHA negative obligate.

Calf Name — Pending
Dam: FF Julie Elizabeth
Sire: K&B Valley's Logan
Expected: Fall 2027
Traits: This calf will be dun, Chondro and PHA negative.  We are working to improve Liza's body condition.  She came to us in poor shape with a case of pneumonia so this picture is a bit misleading.  She has a lot of potential and this will be her 2nd calf.  Bred to Neo, we expect this calf to have a lot of bone and depth.  We still have to test her milk status to see what the calf will have.
Dam: GAF Country Girl
Dam: GAF Country Girl
Sire: Plum Creek's Ned
Sire: Plum Creek's Ned
Expected Calf
Expected Calf
Calf Name — Pending
Dam: GAF Country Girl
Sire: Plum Creek's Ned
Expected: Fall 2027
Traits: This will be Country Girl's first calf, and we expect it to be outstanding.  She is heavy Belle Fourche bred and Ned is a Belle Fourche Mon Capitan grandson with some James Potter breeding thrown in as well.  The calf will have A2/A2 milk and be red or black carrying dun.  We expect her calves to look a lot like Sadie's as they have similar breeding.
Dam: Mossy Valley's Olive Ann
Dam: Mossy Valley's Olive Ann
Sire: Plum Creek's Ned
Sire: Plum Creek's Ned
Expected Calf
Expected Calf
Calf Name — Pending
Dam: Mossy Valley's Olive Ann
Sire: Plum Creek's Ned
Expected: Winter 2027
Traits: We are most anxious for this 2nd generation Mossy Valley bred calf to appear in late winter2027 or early 2028.  The calf will be dun, polled, A2/A2 milk and Chondro/PHA negative obligate.  Olive Ann is a product of our Neo and a close relative to Hazel.  Crossing her with Ned will give us the outstanding bone structure and depth we strive to produce here at our farm.
